In 2012, a theme of the London Olympics was to motivate a generation. At the end of the Olympics, a reporter asked the London Olympic Organizing Committee, "How do you understand sports motivating a generation?". Said the head of the London Olympic Organizing Committee, first of all, to teach our children to win under the constraints of rules.
In many Asian countries, we were very good at following the rules with a very strong emphasis on winning. We constructed sports facilities to develop the strength and stamina of our people, which is good for physical development. Physical training is not an option and sports ground is a must to encourage good physical development.
What is most impressive is not about winning under the constraints of rules, it was the second statement that the head of the London Olympic Organizing Committee had added, to teach our children to lose gracefully and with dignity. This takes lots of characters and so much easier to be instilled early in a child’s development.
Physical education has been focusing on the physical portion but lack the character formation aspect, at least in most parts of Asia. Our center has been renovated in late 2018 to include a sports ground, firstly, to allow our children the opportunities to exercise in the open, secondly, to develop their characters to handle losing in a graceful and dignify way.
A champion knows he does not always win. So he learns to lose with dignity. Let’s help our children build a balanced mindset to handle winning and losing with ease!
